The Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe has elected Jari Pirjola, LL.D., as a member of the Committee for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment, CPT. Pirjola’s new four-year term will begin on 19 December 2019 and end on the 19 December 2023. Jari Pirjola is Principal Legal Adviser at the Office of the Parliamentary Ombudsman.
Twenty-four applications were received for the position and the Finnish Delegation to the Council of Europe at Parliament interviewed six applicants.
The CPT strives to prevent torture and inhuman or degrading treatment of persons deprived of their liberty in the 47 member states of the Council of Europe.
It conducts inspections at closed institutions such as prisons, psychiatric hospitals, closed institutions for the care of older people or, for example, immigrant detention units.
The Committee has one member from each member state of the Council of Europe.
